The Federal Government has not contacted the union after issuing a new strike threat, according to the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities.
On June 19, 2024, the Federal Government was given two weeks by the Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities to pay the four months’ worth of salaries that had been withheld.
In addition, the JAC had threatened to close colleges and intercollegiate centers in the event that the government did not release the delayed salaries by the deadline.
The two non-teaching staff unions, in a letter to the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, accused the government of neglect and insincerity.
In the letter titled, ‘Re- Four (4) months withheld salaries: Demand for immediate payment’, which was signed by the NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, the two unions said they could no longer guarantee industrial harmony in the universities.
Speaking to Saturday PUNCH in Abuja on Friday, SSANU’s National President, Muhammed Ibrahim, noted that the unions had not received any response from the letter it sent to the minister on the status of the withheld salaries.
